Marinades are perfect for inexpensive cuts of meat.
Marinating a lean cut of beef in a flavourful marinade helps to tenderize them, resulting in a tender, tasty and juicy steak! Marinades are perfect for an inexpensive or tough cut of beef like a flank steak, also called a hanger steak or skirt steak. A good marinade is made with simple ingredients and is so easy to put together.

Flank Steak Marinade Recipe Tips:
Marinades are perfect for inexpensive cuts of steak like flank and skirt steaks. Here are some tips for marinating!
- OILS: You can use vegetable oil, olive oil, canola oil
- VINEGARS: Common marinade vinegars include red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar
- CONTAINER: I like to marinate my steaks in a disposable ziplock bag. It’s easy, fuss and mess free. Also, having the marinade and the meat in a bag makes it really easy to massage the sauce into the meat. You can also use a covered rimmed baking sheet or baking dish or any airtight container.
- LET IT REST: For best results, let the steaks marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, but overnight is best.
- MASSAGE IT: Make sure to massage the bags a couple of times during the marinating time, as this helps to ensure that the steak will be coated in the marinade as much as possible.
- BEFORE GRILLING: Right before you are ready to grill, give the steaks one last good massage in the marinade.
- DONENESS: Flank steak is best cooked to an internal temperature of 125-130 degrees F for medium rare, or 135-145 degrees F for medium. Try not to overcook the steak as it can become quite tough if it’s cooked past medium.
- FREEZING: Yes, you can freeze your steaks in the marinade! When you are ready to use them, just thaw the steaks in the fridge until they are completely unfrozen.

How to Barbecue Flank Steaks
Now that your steaks are marinated, it’s time to barbecue! Here is our easy method for a tender and perfectly grilled steak.

How to Barbecue Flank Steaks
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb marinated flank steak (use any of your favourite marinades or see above for recipes)
Instructions
- After the steaks have been marinated, and you're ready to grill, preheat your barbecue to high heat.
- Brush the grill with a little bit of oil, then add the steak, sear it on both sides, then turn down the heat to medium, and cook each side about 3-4 minutes, so roughly 8-10 minutes total. We like ours slightly pink inside, so if you prefer yours more well done, just cook it a little longer.
- Flank steak is best cooked to an internal temperature of 125-130 degrees F for medium-rare steak, or 135-145 degrees F for medium. Try not to overcook the steak as it can become quite tough if it's cooked past medium.
- Note: marinated flank steaks will flare the first time you set them on the grill, so be prepared for that. This does leave a nice char!
- Once the steak is done remove it from the barbecue, cover with aluminum foil and let the steak rest or about 5 minutes before you slice and serve it.
- Place the steak on to a cutting board with a layer of sheets of paper towels under the board to catch any juices.
- When slicing flank steak, the best way is to make sure to cut against the grain of the meat.
- Serve immediately.
Have a delicious day!
