Nothing like homemade.

Theres’s just nothing more yummy than homemade bread. Truly. And have you ever had a hamburger with homemade burger buns?! The best. These buns are soft, flavourful and taste so good. Not to mention they’re easy to make, just let your bread machine do most of the work for you, then shape the dough and bake these buns in your oven. So sooooo good.

Bread Machine Hamburger Buns Recipe Tips

  • FLOUR: Use all-purpose flour or bread flour.
  • YEAST: Use fresh instant yeast, also known as Bread Machine Yeast or Rapid Rise Yeast.
  • BUTTER: Use salted butter at room temperature.
  • MILK: Use buttermilk at room temperature.
  • SHAPING THE DOUGH: This recipe makes 10 medium sized burger buns. You could make 12 buns, but they will be smaller.
  • PREPARE THE BAKING PAN: Grease a baking sheet with oil or butter. Or line it with parchment paper.
  • STORAGE: Store these buns in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
  • FREEZING: These buns freeze well. Let them cool completely before freezing. Freeze in large airtight freezer bags for up to 2 months.
  • BUTTER THE TOPS: When the buns are done baking, immediately brush them with butter or olive oil. This will give them nice buttery, shiny tops.

Proofing/Rising Tip!

I have a proofing setting on my oven which I use, but you can create a ‘proofing environment’ in your oven oven: preheat your oven to 115 degrees FAHRENHEIT, then turn the oven off once it reaches that temp. Cover the dough in the pan with a clean tea towel, then place it into the oven and let it rise. I also add a bowl of boiling hot water in the oven to let off a little extra moisture.

Course Bread
Servings 10 buns

Ingredients

Bun Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cup buttermilk at room temperature
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter at room temperature
  • 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour or bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp bread machine or instant yeast

Topping:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

Instructions

  • Measure all of the bun ingredients in the order they are listed, into your bread machine.
1 1/3 cup buttermilk, 1 large egg, 1 1/4 tsp salt, 2 tbsp granulated sugar, 2 tbsp butter, 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour, 1 1/2 tsp bread machine or instant yeast
  • Choose the 'Dough Cycle'.

Shaping the dough:

  • Grease a baking sheet with oil.
  • Once the dough cycle has completed remove the dough then divide it into 10 equal sized portions.
  • Now it’s time to shape the dough into 10 buns: Make sure your hands are lightly floured, then shape each portion of dough into a ball. You want the tops of the buns to be taut, so while keeping the dough in a ball shape, you need to tuck the dough at the bottom of each bun, underneath as you roll. You’ll get the hang of it as you roll them!
  • Place the buns onto the greased baking sheet, spacing them out evenly. See images above for reference.
  • Brush the tops of each dough ball lightly with olive oil.
  • Cover with a clean tea towel and let rest and rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size. Or see my tip above for proofing!

Baking the buns:

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • When the buns are done rising, bake for 20 – 25 minutes. When the buns are done they should be golden brown and sound hollow when you tap the tops.
  • As soon as you take the buns out of the oven, brush the tops with butter or olive oil.
1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Let the buns rest for about 10 minutes then enjoy!
