Have them ready for dinner tonight!

These breadsticks take about 1 hour and 45 minutes from start to finish, so you can easily have them ready for dinner tonight! If you’re eating at 6PM, start the dough around 4 so you can serve them warm from the oven. YES.

Bread Machine Breadsticks Recipe Tips

  • FLOUR: Use all-purpose flour or bread flour.
  • YEAST: Use fresh Instant Yeast: also called Bread Machine Yeast and Rapid Rise Yeast.
  • BUTTER: I like to use melted butter (it has more flavour), but you can use vegetable oil.
  • SUGAR: I like to use brown sugar for this recipe, but you can use regular granulated sugar.
  • STORAGE: Keep the breadsticks in an airtight container on your counter, they’re fine at room temperature.
  • FREEZING: These breadsticks freeze well. Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag for up to 3 months.

How to Make Breadsticks:

With this recipe you can make 14 – 6 inch breadsticks. You will notice that the dough is quite airy, and it’s supposed to be, these breadsticks are fluffy and soft! Here are some quick tips:

  • Roll out the dough and shape it into a 10 x 12 inch rectangle.
  • Cut the rectangle horizontally through the middle.
  • Then cut the dough vertically into 1 inch strips. You should end up with 14 strips of dough.
  • Twist the dough then place the strips onto 2 greased baking pans. They don’t have to be perfect.
  • Cover and let rise for about 15 minutes, until the breadsticks puff up in size.

Flavour Options:

  • You can add minced garlic or garlic powder to the melted butter to brush the tops of the baked breadsticks. Then you have garlic breadsticks!
  • Sprinkle some Italian seasoning or any dried herbs (like oregano, basil or rosemary) on with the Parmesan cheese and butter.

Ingredients

Breadstick Dough:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp bread machine yeast

Topping:

  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese amount depends on how much you like

Instructions

  • Measure all of the above dough ingredients, in the order that they are listed, into your bread machine.
  • Choose the ‘dough cycle’.
  • Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the bread machine pan, and place it on a lightly floured surface.
  • Roll the dough into a 10 x 12 inch rectangle.
  • Cut the dough in half lengthwise (right down the middle horizontally).
  • Then cut the dough vertically into 1 inch strips. You should end up with 14 strips of dough.
  • Lightly grease 2 baking sheets with oil.
  • Take each strip of dough and give it twist. Then place them on a baking sheet (7 sticks to a baking sheet), about an inch or more apart.
  • Cover with a tea towel and let rise for 15 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
  • You can place both baking sheets in your oven, just stagger them slightly for better air flow.
  • Bake for 10 – 12 minutes. When they are done, the breadsticks should have puffed up slightly, and should be golden brown. When you tap the tops, they will sound hollow.
  • Remove from the oven and brush the hot breadsticks with the melted butter then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  • Serve immediately.

They turned out so amazing! Really easy to make too.

  2. Do you freeze before or after baking?

  3. Can I make the dough in the morning and bake later for dinner?

    1. Yes, just make sure to cover it and put it in the fridge so it doesn’t over rise, then take it out of the fridge about 15-20 minutes before you want to bake it so it has time to warm up slightly.
