Bright and Pretty Spring Home Tour: Part 2

Welcome to my Bright and Pretty Spring Home Tour where I’m sharing some simple ideas to add a little spring to your kitchen and living room!

Hello friends!  This week I’ve joined my blogger friends as we come together to share our homes all decorated for spring!  These tours are part of the Seasonal Simplicity Spring Series hosted by Krista of The Happy Housie.  In case you missed my first post in this spring series, you can find it here –> 3 Easy Easter Napkin Rings.  Be sure to visit all the spring home tours in the links at the bottom of this post.

If you’re coming over from the home of Cassie at Cassie Bustamante, welcome! Isn’t her home amazing? It’s one of my most favourite…I love the way Cassie decorates so much.  Last week I shared part 1 of my spring home tour, and today as part of this tour, I’m sharing my living room and kitchen where I dusted off winter and sprinkled on spring.

Welcome to my home.

Thank goodness for these spring home tours…especially this year.  They’re just what I need to get motivated to clean my house, organize and make everything feel fresh again haha!  And what better time to do this than now as spring sloooooowly makes its way here. I love the feeling of the arrival of spring, but the truth is, we have an awful spring. It’s not what you see in movies where the grass is green and tulips are in bloom and the weather is warm and delightful. I mean, we can get some pretty fantastic weather for 5 minutes, but if you wait long enough a blizzard will suddenly appear and it’s winter all over again. We pretty much have to endure this weather rollercoaster until the end of May. I wish I was kidding.  Anyway, that’s life here in the Great White North.  So I dig out all of my spring decor, buy bunches of tulips and make it spring inside.  Come on in.

Our home.

We’ve lived in our home since my oldest two were in preschool and now one is high school, one is graduated, and my third kid who we brought home from the hospital to this house, is just months away from junior high…just writing that actually made my heart squeeze.  How fast time flies.  We always said this house was only going to be part of our 5 year plan before we moved out to the country or the west coast, but as the kids grew up we became rooted in schools and our community, and here we are almost 15 years later.  Over this time we haven’t done much to our home with the exception of surface upgrades with paint and new carpet…mostly just keeping up with general maintenance to keep the house in good shape.

Creating a family friendly space.

The main goal for my home is to make it a space that everyone feels comfortable in. There’s not a space, couch, pillow or room that’s off limits.  Our home is meant to be lived in. Like really lived in.

Love your space.

Over the last year as we were forced to spend A LOT more time in our homes, I put extra focus on making our home as liveable and cozy and comfortable as possible.  I mean, that has always been my goal, but this year I really changed things up, because when you have 5 people and two dogs in a living space almost 24-7, it’s important to love your space.  Speaking of dogs…meet Blu, he’s our newest addition!

A vision of white.

The biggest change I made over the last year was reconfiguring our living space.  And it all started with this gorgeous couch (this is an affiliate link), that I have been coveting for years.  I decided this was the year to finally buy it. I wanted a more inviting room with big cozy comfortable couches that would fit all 5 of us comfortably for movie nights.  For years I had a set of dark and really almost too big (and honestly not that comfortable) couches in our living room…I *liked* them, but didn’t love them. I just always had a different vision for my living room that included something bright and functional.  If I could I’d have a house all in white haha

This is where we gather.

And you might be thinking, HOW can you have a white couch with 3 kids and 2 dogs?! I know, I know…but I just had to decide that I was not going to sweat the small stuff.  It was more important to me to have a space where everyone can sit together comfortably, and this couch made that happen.  Since this couch arrived, magically teenagers have emerged from their rooms and they’re now congregating on the comfiest couch ever.  This is where we gather. This is where we laugh together, watch movies and hang out.  I’ll take it.  😉

Simple Seasonal Touches

And now I’m having the most fun decorating for spring. With such a bright and neutral backdrop, it’s easier than ever to add pops of seasonal colour (I can’t wait to decorate for Christmas haha).  For spring I didn’t add much to this space, just a few simple things to add some colour.

Pillows, pillows, and throws oh my!

Then I added some pretty new peachy-pink chenille cushions and throw blankets, and layered them in with more pillows and throws that I already had in my stash.  I love the look of different textures, patterns and colours.  Decorating Tip!  Purchase some standard pillowcase inserts (I like the 18×18), then only buy decorative cushion covers when you want new pillows. That way you won’t have to store dozens of pillows. Just remove the pillow covers, fold them and put them away for each season.

My Simple Spring Mantel

My mantel is very simple…I keep the decorations to a minimum here because I really just love how the stone and white shelving look on their own. All I did was layer two pieces of artwork…my son actually bought me that Hollyhock painting at a flea market for $5 a couple of years ago and it’s one of my favourite pieces for a number of reasons!  I thought the colours were perfect in this space and I love how it looks layered with an artwork garden centre find.

Then I added some pretty candles and a little cactus arrangement.

Don’t forget the flowers!

It’s not spring in our home until there are bouquets of tulips!  I wait alllllll winter long to buy tulips.  I buy a bunch almost every time I’m at the market…they’re an indulgence I can justify because flowers change the whole feel of a home.  They add life, colour and so much happiness.  Decorating Tip! If there’s one thing I can recommend that you do to brighten up your space it’s to add a $5 bunch of spring tulips!

Spring in the Kitchen

Now into the kitchen we go! Since the main floor of my home is an open concept, my kitchen blends into my living room. Because of this I also like to decorate my kitchen and eating nook for each season.  I don’t add much, just a few simple decorations and flowers will do.

Decorating tip!  Fresh fruit displays always look great in kitchen home decor!  A bowl of lemons is especially pretty for spring.

Spring in my sunshine room!

I’m also sharing a little tour of my new home office/creator space, so make sure to click over to see that too!  This is a newly decorated space in our home.  My kids outgrew this playroom, so we transformed it into my home office/creator space/reading room/living room and we’re enjoying it so much.  It’s been a lovely retreat during isolations over the past year.
