Bright and Pretty Spring Home Tour: Part 1

Welcome to my Bright and Pretty Spring Home Tour, I’m so happy to have you here! I hope you leave feeling inspired to add a touch of sunshine and spring to your home. xo

Today I am joining Marty at A Stroll Thru Life  for her Spring Home Tour, so make sure to check out all of gorgeous spring homes from other bloggers at the bottom of this post. If you’re coming over from Julia’s home at Cuckoo4Design, welcome!  Today, as part of this tour, I’m sharing my home all decorated for spring…or early spring…or wishing it was spring, because honestly at any time now we could get another dump of snow…spring doesn’t really start here until late May…at any rate, it feels like spring inside!

My home is my sanctuary.

Now more than ever, our homes are our retreat and sanctuary away from the world as we unexpectedly we found ourselves in our homes a lot more this year than we ever had before.  With all the turmoil and uncertainty I know I certainly turned my focus into my home to make it a cozy, relaxing and functional place for my family. Suddenly we were creating office spaces, play spaces and making our home work better for us, because we were forced to.  In many ways this time was a hidden blessing for me because I tackled some decorating and reorganizing that I had been putting off for a long time. Things are really starting to come together and we are all enjoying our home more than ever.  And decorating for the seasons feels even more special, and I have looked forward to this as each season and holiday arrived.  This spring was no exception. I was happy to dust away winter and welcome in some sunshine and spring!

Welcome to my Bright and Pretty Spring Home Tour!

Come on in!  I’m happy you are here.

For this spring home tour, let’s start at the front door and make our way into the main area of my home. As you come in you’ll see that I added really simple spring touches…easy and pretty touches that I think make a big difference!

A Clutter Free Entryway

Our entryway is quite simple. I like to keep this space functional yet clutter free, because it’s the first thing you see when you come to my home. To keep away the clutter that comes with a family of 5 with 2 dogs, I made sure to have ample storage to hang coats and hide away muddy spring shoes…just don’t look at our back door area…that’s next on our list haha.

To freshen up this space from all the winter dust, I added just a couple spring touches…a new rug and a little green fern.

My Open Concept Living Space

As you come through the entryway you will see our open concept living space. This is the area of our home that we spend the most time in. It’s where we gather for meals, conversation, games and movie nights…it’s the hardest working space in our home.  And because we spend so much time here I wanted it to be pretty, functional, liveable and happy.  And of course, decorated for spring!

a view of a bright white kitchen space

It’s my favourite space in my home…I love how bright and cheery and fresh it feels.

A family friendly living space.

The most important thing about my home, especially when it comes to decorating, is that everything has to be family friendly.  There’s no space, pillow or piece of furniture that’s off limits.  So when I’m decorating and purchasing things for my home, I make sure that it’s durable and easy to clean…I even have white couches.  Yes, you can have a family friendly living space with white couches, I promise!  😉  These couches are comfy and easy to clean, and they fit everyone comfortably all stretched out for movie nights…that’s all that matters.  We spend a lot of time here.  Also, my kids are older now so I don’t stress over mess…honestly it’s our newest addition that you can see below that gives me a bit of a trouble, but he’s so cute I can’t even be mad.

Spring Means Colour!

One of the things that I love most about having a light couch and light furniture, is how fun and easy it is to add pops of colour!  And after a long winter, colour for spring is very very welcome!  So to welcome in spring I added some new peachy-pink pillows and throw blankets, and layered them in with more spring cushions that I already had. I love layering together different patterns and colours…they match but don’t match and I love that.

Comfort is key!

I love loads of throw pillows and blankets on the couch. I want to be able to snuggle in under cozy blankets and big soft pillows when we’re watching TV. In fact, I have a stash of heated blankets that live in permanent residency on my couch…but they don’t match so they didn’t make it into my home tour hahaha!  But the point is, comfy and cozy is key.  If a space is uncomfortable, no one is going to hang around.  I want my kids to want to be with us so I created a space that makes them comfortable too.  It’s amazing how heated blankets and soft couches draw teenagers out of their rooms! 😉

Flowers feel like spring.

One of the most easy and lovely ways to add a touch of spring to your home is with flowers.  I wait with baited breath for tulips to arrive in our markets here in spring…I’m practically the first in line for them!  And I love them to make a statement so I made this simple arrangement with about 25 tulips…I just LOVE it…and with that green vase…all the heart eyes.  That ‘vase’ is actually a terrarium that I found at a local greenhouse, and as soon as I saw it I envisioned it loaded with tulips.  It did not disappoint in its gorgeousness.

Less is more for me.

Other than a few pillows, blankets and flowers, I didn’t add much more to my living space.  I like the fresh feel of how it is right now, and didn’t want to add too much clutter, which can happen quickly with my mantel/bookcase feature wall. I LOVE this feature wall so much, but it can be a bit of a balancing act to not make it look too cluttered.  Honestly though, I don’t really change much on the bookshelves because I don’t know what to do with this space…one day I’ll figure it out, but for now it’s fine the way it is with pictures of family, art pieces collected on travels and different sentimental pieces.  Everything on the bookshelves has a little story behind it.

My Sunshine Room

Next up on my pretty spring home tour is my office/bonus room/sunshine space! One of the things that really changed for us over the last year (and for many many others) was having 5 people in our house that needed places to work and “go” to school. Creating work spaces required quite a bit of moving around, but we made it work for everyone.  The biggest changes we made to make this happen, was to redecorate our bonus room which is located upstairs.  I really wish I could show you a before picture of this space…it has undergone quite a transformation!

Go where the light is!

Our bonus room was one of the most underused and under appreciated spaces in our home. We’ve been in our home for almost 15 years and for much of that time it was the playroom/TV room for our kids.  They spent a lot of time in here and so of course over time it needed a refresh…the carpet was awful, the paint was terrible, the storage was non existent, and it was just a room that I did not enjoy spending time in.  Which is really a shame because it receives all of the sunshine our home gets.  Now with the kids being older, we decided to redo this room with new paint and carpet, and make it a space that felt nice to be in, just in time for spring!

Creating Unconventional Office Spaces

With all of us working from home over periods of time, this forced me to finally put my “office” up in to our bonus room.  I have been wanting to do this for years because the lighting is SO MUCH BETTER up here and I need the light for my food photography.  So with just a few simple furnishings I created an office space that I love so much.

A Place for Everything.

I was also able to get all of my blog props and crafting supplies into 2 cabinets in this space!  Doing this was such an undertaking but I’m so happy I finally did it.  When my home feels organized I feel so much more relaxed…I don’t do well with clutter.  Plus, these extra cabinets are the perfect spot for all the spring plants I added.  Pops of green life are so welcome here.

Bring that patio furniture inside!

Now can we talk about this egg chair for a quick minute?!  I happened to come across a new shipment of these egg chairs in Walmart, and as soon as I saw them, I envisioned sitting in one on warm summer evenings on the deck.  And since those warm evenings are months away, I decided to put it into my new office.  I love it here so much…I’m not sure I’m going to be able to let it go!  I think it fits in here perfectly and makes the space feel springy and fun.

I also wanted to add a few spring touches to this bonus room space because we do spend quite a bit of time here soaking up the sunshine…it’s a great place to read a book and take a nap.  My spring decorating is very minimal here with just a couple of springy cushions and of course more plants!

Thank you!
