My Living Room Refresh for Late Summer/Early Fall
I have the bug. The redecorating, refreshing, makeover bug. And I’ve got it bad! Something about the change in season (especially this one) makes me want to add new life into my home. I’m just going to go with it. It makes me feel good and my family enjoys it too! So I started in our living room because it’s the heart of our home.
But there will be no pumpkins in this refresh. I can’t do it yet. No pumpkins, no fall leaves. Nope, none of that. Our trees are still so full and green, my flowers are in full bloom, and there’s not an orange pumpkin to be found anywhere. Really, it’s late summer here. Definitely not summer, but late summer. The sun has changed, and there is a crispness in the air, and when I look around I’m seeing sunflowers and apples, not pumpkins. The pumpkins will wait a few more weeks before I bring them out in full force, but for now, I’m refreshing my home for late summer! Come…take a tour with me!
Warning! Lots and lots and lots of photos! 😉

This fall I really wanted to refresh our living space, but I didn’t want to do anything major to it like painting, and we don’t need new furniture, so instead I switched out our accent pieces. I’m always amazed at how some simple changes with pillows, rugs and flowers can make a room look completely different! If you want to see my living room before, you can see it here in my winter living room (the bottom two pictures are a good glimpse into how my living room looked before).
One of the biggest changes we made to this space was to change out the rug. The rug that was here before was beautiful, but I just found it too busy. The pattern and colours were such that I couldn’t even change out the pillows if I wanted to. So, we went back to a neutral, oatmeal coloured rug and I love it! I especially love that now I can pretty much accent with any colour or pattern that I want.
The next thing I did was replace all of our pillows and throws. These pillows are really what inspired my living room refresh! I saw them at Chapters/Indigo one day while I was wandering around sipping my pumpkin spice latte, and I just knew they would be perfect in this space. I don’t usually splurge on things like this, but an unexpected (and very appreciated) gift from my Grandma & Grandpa funded this part of the makeover. (So very thankful!) 🙂
To tie everything together, all this room needed was fresh flowers! When I saw this Evleen Mercury Glass Vase from Pottery Barn I knew it would look stunning holding a beautiful sunflower bouquet. I love the mercury glass base, and it’s the perfect height for flowers.
So I bought a bunch of sunflowers and grass filler, and got to work. I love a rustic looking bouquet so I just played with the flowers until the arrangement looked the way I had envisioned it. Doesn’t it just look perfect in that vase?!
I think this late summer sunflower bouquet turned out so pretty! Love love love love love!
Then I shopped around my home and added a few extra pieces. Shopping around for things you already have is the easiest way to redecorate! It’s amazing what you find laying around just waiting to be used!
Like this bench for example! I love this barnwood bench SO much. My parents bought this for us in the spring, and we’ve been enjoying it on our front porch. But with winter coming (shudder) I wanted to bring it indoors and enjoy it inside. It’s the perfect addition to our living room! Now we have storage space for throws, as well as extra seating.
I also played with my mantel and kept that really simple. I always seem to go back to the same 2 pieces up there, but the old window frame and glass art seem to work with every season. By adding a couple sunflowers and a bunch of wheat, the mantel is simple and seasonal. I always have fun with this part of my living room. The shelves are great for displaying pictures and seasonal accents too.
Then I finished the room off by adding fresh apples, and some blue accent pieces. Simple and so pretty!

Hi Jo-Anna,
I love your blog and your living room. Can you please tell me where you purchased your sectional?
Thanks.
Thank you Alicia! Our couch is from La-Z Boy. We’ve had it for several years and still love it!
Love, love, love the sunflowers! I too, am having a hard time decorating for fall. It’s my favorite season, but when it’s 90 degrees outside I just can’t get in the mood!

Thank you Christy! I know exactly what you mean! It’s so hot and summery here too, that I just can’t go in to the pumpkin or Halloween mode yet! I figure there is still lots of time! 😉
Just beautiful!
Thank you! 😉
Love the color of blue in the pillows! So pretty! And I have been looking for a sectional just like that. Looks like I’m going to a La-Z Boy! Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for stopping by! (btw, we love love our sectional!)

Thank you Felicia! It just doesn’t feel quite like fall here yet, so I’m embracing summer for as long as I can! And sunflowers are the perfect way to do that! 🙂
Everything looks so tidy and pretty….and I looooove that bench…xo
Thank you Lucy! 🙂
Great new pillows! And I LOVE that little bench!
Thank you Emily! I love these pillows…they were exactly what I was looking for and didn’t even know it! 🙂
That’s a really nice refresh you gave to the room. I get frustrated sometimes because I feel like I need to rearrange furniture to change things up, but my husband isn’t always around when inspiration strikes to carry the other end of the couch! Plus, our living room is a weird long shape that makes new furniture configurations a little challenging. But you made a big change with just a few inexpensive accessory changes — very nice! I recently cleaned up and “fall-ified” my back patio – you can check it out here: http://www.beautyschooldropout.net/?p=3230
Hi Sarah!
I get frustrated with the shape of our space too…it’s set up as such that I can’t move around any furniture either. So that’s why I have fun with accessories…I’m always feeling the need to refresh things and a few new items help to transform the space! 🙂
Hi Jo-Anna,
I really love what you did to your living room. It looks so fresh, but at the same time cozy. Lovely choices!! Bye the way your grouping pictures are just perfect for the wall. Enjoy!!
Thank you Lynda!
That’s a beautiful room! We have a similar couch (color and shape) in our family room. I still need to get some pillows and curtains for that room. Your post is inspiring me! Thanks!

Your home looks absolutely lovely! I love all of the fall touches like the apples and sunflowers. I like how you used rugs to help define space. I am looking to upgrade my living room for the fall. I think I want to place some new Oriental Rugs in the living room. What is your trick for keeping the rugs aligned with the furniture so it doesn’t look to overwhelming? The way you have it compliments the room and furniture perfectly!
Your living room is simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I love the colors and the cleaness.
