Creamy Mashed Potato Gratin

Creamy Mashed Potato Gratin
If you love mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes, then you will absolutely LOVE this Creamy Mashed Potato Gratin! This dish combines the two and is made up of 2 layers: a creamy, cheesy mashed potato layer, and a potato gratin topping that’s buttery and Parmesan-cheesy!

Great for any occasion!
This gratin can be made for any dinner, but I especially like to serve it at holiday dinners like Thanksgiving and Christmas with turkey or ham, or New Years with prime rib. So good.

Creamy Mashed Potato Gratin Recipe Tips
- POTATOES: Use a starchy potato like Yukon Gold potatoes or Russet potatoes.
- CHEESE: You can use any kind of white cheese that you like, I like to use Monterey Jack cheese or a sharp white cheddar. Mozzarella and Gruyère cheese are also delicious.
- CREAM: I like to use half and half cream or whole milk (3%), but you can also use a mixture of milk and heavy cream. Just DON’T use skim milk or low fat milk.
- GARLIC (optional): Adding garlic is optional. If you prefer no garlic, just leave it out. This is definitely a personal preference…with turkey we prefer no garlic, with beef roast we like garlic.
- SLICE THICKNESS: For the top layer make sure to slice the potatoes thin, about 1/8 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer.
- PREP THE DISH: Make sure to grease a 9×13 casserole dish with butter before adding the potatoes.
- MAKE AHEAD TIP: You can assemble this dish ahead of time. Sometimes I like to assemble it in the morning, then slip them into the oven closer to dinner time. This is especially helpful when I’m putting together a holiday dinner and I’m pressed for time. Or you can assemble it a day ahead then bake, just make sure to cover tightly before refrigerating.
- LEFTOVERS: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
Putting it all together:
This dish is really simple to put together. Here are a few pictures to show you what the layering looks like.

The creamy mashed potatoes go on the bottom of a buttered 9×13 baking dish.

The sliced potatoes for the gratin layer are tossed with butter and Parmesan cheese (and garlic if you’re using it).

Then the sliced potatoes are layered over top of the mashed. You can make this layer look rustic or line them up perfectly, it’s up to you.

Bake until golden and bubbly. Let rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Yum.
