These Parker House Rolls are the ultimate dinner roll! They’re so soft and buttery and a little bit salty. They pair with everything and also make great sandwiches. So if you’re looking for a roll that everyone will love, this recipe is it. And bonus points for the ease of the dough being made in the bread maker!

It’s all about the fold.

So what are Parker House Rolls? The story is that Parker House Rolls originated from the Parker House Hotel in Boston in the 1800’s. Now they’re known as the most delicious, buttery, yummy dinner rolls. They differ from other rolls in that the dough is first rolled out, smothered in butter, then folded over, and baked. Then these buns are smothered once again with more butter and sprinkled with a little bit of salt. And they’re delicious. OH SO VERY delicious.

Perfect for dinner!

These buns are great any time of year, but we especially love them at Thanksgiving or for Christmas dinner. They’re amazing with roasted turkey and all the trimmings! Or use them to make sandwiches or sliders. So good.

Shaping the dough into buns.

Here’s a really simple look at how to shape the dough into Parker House Rolls.

Split the dough into 2 balls. Roll out each ball into a 12×8 rectangle.

Spread 3 tablespoons of melted butter between the 2 rectangles (1.5 tbsp on each).

Cut the dough in half lengthwise then fold over as shown above (for both sections). Making sure to leave about 1/2 inch uncovered on once side.

Cut the strips into 6 pieces. I use a pizza cutter to do this.

Then place the bun dough in a buttered 9×13 baking pan, placing the open fold towards the long length of the pan.

Let rise for 1 hour. See rising/proofing tips below.

About Proofing/Rising

I have a proofing setting on my oven which I use, but you can create a ‘proofing environment’ in your oven oven: preheat your oven to 115 degrees FAHRENHEIT, then turn the oven off once it reaches that temp. Cover the dough in the pan with a clean tea towel, then place it into the oven and let it rise. I also add a bowl of boiling hot water in the oven to let off a little extra moisture.

No need for perfection.

I repeat, there is no need for perfection. Bread dough has a mind of it’s own. You can shape the dough as perfectly as possible, but sometimes during the proofing and or baking process, dough just does what it wants. As long as the buns taste good, that’s all that matters!

Parker House Rolls Recipe Tips

  • PAN SIZE: Use an 9 x 13 baking pan that is prepped with 3 tablespoons of melted butter.
  • FLOUR: Use all-purpose flour or bread flour.
  • MASHED POTATO FLAKES: Why use mashed potato flakes? The addition of the potato flakes makes the dough more light, fluffy and moist. Use plain mashed potato flakes. I have also used ‘butter’ flavour flakes and they work too.
  • YEAST: Use fresh instant yeast, also called bread machine yeast or rapid rise yeast.
  • BUTTER: Use melted salted butter (it has more flavour).
  • MILK: Use warm whole milk (not hot) or room temperature milk.
  • STORAGE: Keep these buns in an airtight container.
  • FREEZING: These buns freeze well. Store in a freezer bag in your freezer for up to 1 month.

Ingredients

Bread Machine Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup whole milk (at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 large egg (at room temperature)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup instant mashed potato flakes
  • 2 1/2 tsp instant yeast

Before baking:

  • 3 tbsp melted butter

For the baking pan:

  • 3 tbsp melted butter

For the tops of the baked buns:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Add all of the bread machine ingredients in the order as listed above, into the bread machine.
1 1/4 cup whole milk, 1/4 cup butter, 1 large egg, 1 tsp salt, 3 tbsp granulated sugar, 3 cups all purpose flour, 1/2 cup instant mashed potato flakes, 2 1/2 tsp instant yeast
  • Choose the 'Dough' cycle. Let the bread machine do its thing.
  • Once the dough cycle has completed, remove the dough and place it on a lightly floured surface, then cover with a clean tea towel. Let rise for 15 more minutes.
  • After this time divide the dough into 2 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into a 12 x 8 inch rectangle.
  • Brush each rectangle with the melted butter (1.5 tbsp on each rectangle, so 3 tbsp total).
  • Then cut each of the rectangles in half lengthwise. Now fold each half in 'almost' half lengthwise, leaving about half an inch uncovered. This 'fold' is what give the Parker House Rolls their distinct look. (see image)
  • Now cut the folded dough into 6 pieces along the long length (see image).
  • Grease a 9 x 13 baking pan with 3 tbsp of melted butter.
  • Arrange the cut pieces in the prepared pan with the long sides of the buns running along the long sides of the pan (see image).
  • Cover the pan with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm spot to rise for about one hour (I do this part in my oven on the proofing setting).
  • After this time, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and bake the buns for 20 minutes.
  • Once the buns are done, brush with more melted butter and sprinkle with a bit of salt.
2 tbsp butter, 1/4 tsp salt
  • Let the buns cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully.
