What’s For Dinner? Sweet & Sour Meatballs
It’s been too long since my last post! The week leading up to Halloween had been crazy, so I spent this past week getting back to basics! And for me, that means cleaning, getting organized, stocking the pantry, and cooking.
I love to cook, bake and create all kinds of food. For me, the ritual of cooking for my family is a big way that I show my love for them. While I do have a fairly eager audience, I do occasionally get comments like: “Mom, why do I shiver when I taste something gross?” Nice. And my personal favourite, is “Mom, why did you make this for dinner?” Oh well, I hope they look back on their childhood with memories of a yummy smelling house!
But this week I hit 2 dinner home runs: I made homemade Gnocchi one night, and meatballs tonight. Devoured in silence.
But for now, I wanted to share this yum-yummy meatball recipe! Meatballs in our house are always a favourite. Especially sweet and sour meatballs. Up until today though, I didn’t have the perfect sauce. My very best friend Paula shared this sweet and sour sauce recipe with me, and now I am sharing it with you! The sauce is soooo easy, and soooo yummy! (Although, I did make a minor adjustment and snuck in some pureed yam for added nutrition – I just can’t help it! And no one even noticed it!)
Enjoy!
The Meatballs:
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, minced
1 egg
1/3 cup oats
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp brown sugar
salt & pepper
- Combine and shape into meatballs.
- Bake unsauced meatballs in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes.
Tip!
If you are using frozen meatballs, heat in oven at 350 for about 15 minutes.

2 tbsp soya sauce
2 tbsp ketchup
2 tbsp ketchup
- Combine all ingredients, and bring to a boil.
- Stir, and cook until the sauce thickens.
- Pour the sauce over your cooked meatballs, and heat in a 300 degree oven for about 20-30 minutes. Serves 4 easily.
Yeeeuummm!
