For years I thought the only way to have cranberry sauce was to open a can and mash it into a bowl.  And I liked it well enough, until I tried homemade cranberry sauce.  I can’t even tell you how big of a difference there is between canned vs fresh.  I don’t buy or serve canned cranberry sauce any longer.  I know that it may seem like just another thing you have to make for your big holiday dinners, but trust me, it’s worth the minimal effort it takes to make it.  In fact, you can even make it a couple of days before you intend to serve it…ours lasted for a week in the fridge.

And I must confess I don’t actually make our cranberry sauce…I make my husband do it…actually he likes to make it.  But there’s a solution for you – have someone else make it for you!  😉

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup orange juice

Instructions

  1. Add the fresh cranberries, sugar, water and orange juice to a saucepan over low heat.
  2. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries start to soften and the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes.
  3. Turn up the heat to low-medium and continue to cook until the cranberries burst and the sauce is the consistency that you like. This takes about 10 minutes or so.
  4. Cool the sauce to room temperature before serving.

  1. Yummy. I always make organic homemade cranberry sauce. So easy and so much better than the canned stuff. I add a quarter cup of brown sugar, in addition to white sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a sprinkle of cloves or allspice. Use what you love. Smells delicious while simmering.
