Delicious Homemade Sheet Cake Recipes (9×13)

A delicious collection of 7+ Homemade Sheet Cake Recipes (9×13).  Perfect for parties, potlucks and large gatherings!

I love making 9×13 sheet cakes.  There’s just something so easy about a cake baked in one layer that you don’t have to decorate with elaborate icing. Just a simple spread of icing does the trick and takes off so much of the pressure of baking cakes. But I also love these cakes because they’re easy to transport, so you can take them to parties and potlucks.  And they’re also really easy to serve. Sheet cakes really are the most convenient of all cakes to make.

Let’s talk a bit about “sheet cakes”. When I say sheet cake, I really mean a 9 X 13 cake. But 9 X 13 cakes are often called sheet cakes, I know I’ve called them that before, but technically a 9×13 cake is not a sheet cakes. Sheet cakes are baked on actual sheet pans which are much bigger and have lower sides. But I do think when people look for ‘sheet cakes’ they likely mean 9×13 cakes. I really love making cakes in 9×13 pans. They’re SO easy to make and decorate, and they can feed a small crowd. They’re really the most unfussy of all cakes. Did I mention how easy they are to decorate? No fancy piping…just spread on the delicious frosting and add some sprinkles. Done.

Simple, delicious and crowd pleasing!

Over the years I’ve made quite a few of these cakes and have shared many of them with you.  So I thought it would be a great idea to put them all into one easily accessible spot for you.  And as I make more, I’ll just update this post with the new recipes…so make sure you PIN this post for later!

Sheet Cake Baking Tips:

  • Pan Size: I use a 9×13 baking pan for my sheet cakes
  • Pan Prep: Make sure to prepare your pans before baking. I like to use a flour/oil spray (like PAM), or grease and flour, or parchment paper to line the bottom.
  • Frosting: Make sure to let the cake cool completely before adding the frosting, or the frosting will melt.
  • Serving Size: Most sheet cakes will feed 10 – 12 people
