Spaghetti with Homemade Tomato Sauce (made with canned tomatoes)

This Homemade Tomato Sauce is delicious and healthy!  Made with canned tomatoes, so it’s ready in less than 30 minutes.

There have been many times when I had planned to serve spaghetti for dinner only to find that I’m out of spaghetti sauce!  Gah.  And by that time it’s too late to change my mind because it’s getting late and the kids are excited for their favourite meal.  But not to worry, you can make your own homemade tomato sauce in 30 minutes or less!

Made with the simplest of ingredients.

All you need to make this sauce are some simple ingredients and spices, all of which I bet you already have in your pantry.  Actually what I love most about this recipe is that it uses a can of tomatoes which I always have around, and with the addition of some spices this sauce ends up tasting so fresh and delicious.  And if you’re feeling extra adventurous feel free to add loads of chopped and cooked vegetables like carrots, zucchini, peppers…endless flavour additions!

I love that in 30 minutes, from start to finish, you can have a homemade tomato sauce ready for your spaghetti. Can’t beat that!

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Tips & Tricks

  • Canned Tomatoes: This recipe calls for whole canned tomatoes, but you can also use canned diced tomatoes. I like to use canned San Marzano tomatoes because they are the most flavourful!
  • Bay Leaves: One little word of advice…don’t forget to take out the bay leaf before you blend your sauce or you will have dry woody bits in your spaghetti.  Ask me how I know.
  • Options: Feel free to add loads of chopped and cooked vegetables like carrots, zucchini, peppers…endless flavour additions!
  • Serve with: This homemade tomato sauce is wonderful with these Italian Meatballs! Add a Caesar Salad and garlic bread for a full meal!

30 Minute Homemade Tomato Sauce

This Homemade Tomato Sauce is delicious and healthy!  Made with canned tomatoes, so it’s ready in less than 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, minced
  • 46 cloves of garlic, peeled but left whole
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Saute the onion and garlic in the 1 tbsp of olive oil, until they just start to turn brown.
  2. Add the tomatoes, butter, bay leaf, oregano, sugar, salt and pepper.
  3. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
  4. Remove bay leaf! Do not forget to do this or you will have hard bits in your sauce!
  5. Put the sauce into a blender and puree, or you can use a hand blender.
  6. Enjoy!
