Hello friends! There is so much fun and inspiration for you here today! I’ve teamed up with a group of talented gals to bring you some handmade gift ideas for Mother’s Day! There really is nothing like giving and receiving a handmade gift…they’re just so full of love! So I hope that all together we can give you some ideas to make the Mother in your life feel really special!

So to kick things off, the handmade gift I wanted to share with you is this Make-It-Yourself Lemon Sugar Scrub! It really does smell as good as it sounds.

Just 3 Simple Ingredients!

This DIY lemon sugar scrub has simple and clean ingredients, all you need is a fresh lemon, granulated sugar and coconut oil. Mix it all together and you have a wonderful sugar scrub which is perfect for scrubbing your hands or any other parts that need a good exfoliation (the sugar exfoliates and the coconut oil moisturizes). I really love to use it on my hands and legs especially in the dry winter months…smoooooooth skin anyone?  😉

This homemade sugar scrub has the most lovely sweet citrus scent. And can I just say that it also tastes delicious? Yes I tasted it and I don’t regret it one bit. I figure if I’m going to put it on my skin, I should be able to eat it right? In fact it tastes so good that I would actually consider spreading it on top of warm vanilla muffins. Oh yes I would.

Homemade gifts are the best!

Homemade scrubs make such a nice gift. Put it in a pretty jar, add a cute label and pretty ribbons, then give it as a gift to your Mom, sister, Grandma, friend or daughter…they’ll love it! You can find cute jars at the dollar store, or just use small mason jars.

How to Use This Lemon Sugar Scrub

Apply this lemon coconut sugar scrub to damp skin or dry skin, gently massage a small amount in circular motions, then rinse with warm water. Sometimes I like to use this gentle sugar scrub as a body scrub in the shower. Sugar scrubs are best for exfoliating hands, feet, elbows, knees, arms and legs. I would never use this on my face because it’s just too rough for sensitive skin. Also, just a word of caution, because this has coconut oil, it will make your feet slippery, so please just be careful if you’re using it in the shower or tub.

Lemon Sugar Scrub Recipe Tips

  • LEMON: Use real lemon juice and zest from 1 fresh lemon.
  • ESSENTIAL OILS: I prefer to use fresh lemon, but you can add lemon essential oil instead (about 5 – 8 drops).
  • SUGAR: Just use regular white sugar. I have also made this with brown sugar and organic cane sugar.
  • COCONUT OIL: Use pure, unrefined coconut oil for body sugar scrubs (it’s solid).

FAQs about this lemon sugar scrub

  • Use pure, unrefined coconut oil for body sugar scrubs (it’s solid). Pure coconut oil is solid at room temperature. Unrefined coconut oil smells out-of-this world amazing!

  • No. Pure coconut oil is solid at room temperature, just mix it as is with the sugar. If the coconut oil is melted or warm the sugar dissolves and this isn’t what you want for a scrub.

I store mine in a glass mason jar, and keep it on my counter (there’s no need to refrigerate it). Just keep it tightly sealed so that it doesn’t dry out.

I often get asked what the shelf life for this scrub it, and while I don’t have a definite time frame, I have had a jar last me a year with no issues at all. Just keep it in a cool dry place. And if over time the scrub gets a little hard, add a tsp or more of coconut oil to the jar, let it sit for a couple of hours then stir it again. Add more if needed.

Should the coconut oil be a liquid or solid when mixing? Does it matter?

I melted the coconut oil and didn’t see the post about it needing to be solid :(. Does that matter?

Also, does it need to be refrigerated?

I used it tonight and love it!

        1. Hi Carol! It should be fine as the coconut oil will solidify at room temperature. And no need to refrigerate, I keep mine on the counter for easy access!

          1. Great news! Thanks so much Jo-Anna!

Oh my gosh! I had my third and fourth grade students make this for their moms. They were so excited to be able measure and mix this for their mom (or other significant female) and to give her something they know she will really like. I had them wash their hands in it first so they could see how soft it left the skin feeling!

    1. Oh my, I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Thank you for giving me the honour of being a part of your classroom project, I got chills reading your comment!

  6. Hi!
Looking to make this amazing gift for Mother’s Day with my Kindergarten class. I love how it will be hands on science, math, and art to create it as well as a sensory experience to use it with mom! Just wondering if it’s best to use fresh lemons or if you could get away with using lemon juice out of a bottle, as I need to make enough to fill 31 small mason jars (120ml each).
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Oh that is so exciting!! You absolutely can use lemon juice out of a bottle…the only thing that might not give you the results you may want, is that the fresh lemon zest really does add a beautiful smell to the scrub.

  7. I had my preschoolers (2.5 to 4) make these for their mothers day gifts and they so enjoyed it!! So easy for them to measure and poor and they loved squeezing their own lemons too! Some taste tested it also and aproved haha i tried tit iut on my hands and wow so soft, and the smell… yum! Thank you for this recipe! If i could add a photo i would 🙂

  8. How much lemon zest did you use?

      1. Thank you! It came out amazing!!

  9. Hello! Can I use lemon extract instead of lemon juice?

    1. Absolutely! You will need much less extract, so start with a couple of drops and go from there to get the smell you want.
