Makes a big batch!

This recipe makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies. I love a cookie recipe that makes a batch big enough that you can freeze half for later. In a house with teenagers, cookies disappear quickly so I appreciate being able to freeze some to bring out later for school lunches or snacks. Oh, and frozen cookies are SO good…do you sneak them out of the freezer like I do? haha

  • Flour: Use regular, all-purpose flour.
  • Butter: I use salted butter. You can also use unsalted butter, but add a little extra salt to the dry ingredients.
  • Brown Sugar: Use golden brown sugar.
  • Chocolate Chips: This recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips, but feel free to use white chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate. Small chocolate chunks are delicious too! Even butterscotch or peanut butter chips would be great.
  • Options: If you love nuts, feel free to stir 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts into the batter.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Tips

  • Do you need to let the dough chill before baking? No. But chilled cookie dough always makes the best cookies. I typically let the dough chill for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Baking Time: Bake these cookies for 10 to 12 minutes. The longer you bake them, the less chewy they will be.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container to keep them soft and chewy.
  • Freezing: These cookies freeze well for up to 3 months..

  • Cook Time: 1 hour
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 3 1/2 dozen cookies 1x
  • Category: Cookie
  • Method: Oven

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp hot water (hot tap water is fine)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Using a stand mixer cream together the butter and sugars until smooth (I just use the paddle attachment).
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.
  5. Then mix in the vanilla.
  6. In a small bowl dissolve the baking soda in the hot water, then add it to the butter/sugar mixture, and combine.
  7. In a separate bowl whisk together the salt and flour.
  8. Then add the flour mixture to the butter mixture.
  9. Use a rubber spatula to fold in the chocolate chips.
  10. Drop the chocolate chip cookie dough by large spoonfuls onto your baking sheet, making sure not to crowd the pan (you should be able to easily fit 12 cookies). You can use a cookie scoop or spoon.
  11. Bake for 10 – 12 minutes.  The edges of the cookies should be light brown.  And the longer you bake them, the less chewy they will be.
  12. Let the baked cookies cool on a wire rack.
