Simple Summer Mantel
A couple of weeks ago, my Mom & I hit an ‘antique’ sale in their countryside neighbourhood. I figured since I was looking for country & farm inspired treasures, what better place than out there! And I wasn’t disappointed!
If you are a regular reader, you probably already know about my love of all things ‘farm’ inspired! I have been slowly collecting treasures, including my little distressed table, and I was on the hunt for a weathered window frame. What did I spy? A treasure! A perfectly distressed, white (because I have to have white), beautiful window frame.
GORGEOUS. $4. Yes please. (This is where that Ikea ad comes to my mind: ‘Start the car! Start the car!’)
Gorgeous no?! |
I tossed around the idea of spray painting it with Varathane, like I did my table, but decided I didn’t need to since it wasn’t going to be used for anything except decoration.
But what I did envision that it needed was some chicken wire. So 5 minutes before we were about to head home, I spied a roll of chicken wire in my parents garage. Snip. Snip. All set.
Total project cost $4. Whoot! Time it took to put it all together. 5 minutes. Double whoot! It was almost too easy. But this frame is exactly what I had envisioned for my home!
Love the chicken wire! Love the chippy paint. Just love. |
Lovely. I just wanted a fresh and clean look for the hazy part of summer. Except I think it’s missing something! Keep reading! |

I had to add this pretty peony. Something was missing on my mantel, then I remembered this old bottle that I bought at that same sale. It’s an old cough syrup bottle. Perfect for single stems!
My mantel again, with a little change I think that it needed!
Perfect now. Do you redecorate for the seasons? Are you always moving things around like I am? It’s a bad habit I have, I tell ya!
Very pretty! I love how simple & clean, yet rustic looking it is! Great find 🙂
Soo pretty! Totally my style! Love the window frame
That looks SO pretty! I love the window and I love how the whole palette is so ‘white washed’ and then you get that awesome hit of colour. Looks great!
It turned out so nicely, Jo! I love it with the chicken wire! Great summery mantel, indeed!
Ooooooh, SO pretty! I would have bought that window in a heart beat! Great find, and $4 is a steal of a deal! Definitely a well deserved “start the car” moment!! Ha ha!

That is a total score!! Love it with chicken wire. I find mantels to be the hardest thing (I’m challenged in the table-scaping area). Yours is so lovely!! Pretty pink flowers are perfect.

Lovely, Jo-Anna! I do have an alcove I change for the season’s/holiday’s… I blogged about it awhile back. It lacks the beauty and freshness of your peonies display though, but my alcove gets zero natural light, so, unfortunately, fresh flowers are not an option – love your display and peonies!
Your mantle looks just great – well done!
I LOVE this! I move my stuff around CONSTANTLY, especially at Christmas time, by the time It’s time to take it down I usually decide it’s how i wanted it!
Very pretty. I love the simplicity of it all.
Dropping by from Met Monday.

Love it. I just added chicken wire to a picture frame. That stuff is awesome!
Visiting from Under the Table and Dreaming. I think the pink peonies are beautiful. I used the light and dark pink peonies in my wedding, and I think they look great on your mantel!

I love your mantel. Love the window with the chicken wire. I have several old windows that I use in my house and one that I added chicken wire to myself. So nice to visit with you from Donna’s.
Blessings…Amy
What a great old window frame! I too combine some chicken wire and an old window. I really love the original paint on yours!
So pretty!!! I am doing the glass thing. I am always changing things around. =0) I have been doing it since I was a teenager. I would change my room around it seemed like every month or so.
Thank-you! I love to change things around too – you sound like me – I was always changing my room around too as a kid!
Thanks for stopping by!
