Dark and Moody Shows to Watch on Netflix

I Watch Netflix

True story.

There are just so many shows and movies on my Netflix must-watch list that sometimes I don’t know where to start.  And honestly, some days I want to watch light and airy shows, and other days I feel more like a moody and dark show.  Lately I’ve been on a moody and dark kind of kick, and have found some fantastic shows that I wanted to share with you!

Here’s what’s on my nightstand…errrr I mean TV.

Making a Murderer on Netflix

I’m sure by now you have heard of the documentary Making a Murderer (I don’t know how it would even possible to not have heard of this story!  It seems to be on every news outlet lately).  Making a Murderer is the fascinating true story about Steven Avery, a man who was exonerated by DNA after 18 years in prison, who then becomes the prime suspect in a new crime, a grisly murder.  You have to watch it to believe how crazy this saga is.  Then decide what you think really happened.

Rectify on Netflix

I think Rectify is one of the most completely underrated shows on Netflix right now.  I stumbled upon this show by accident and am I ever glad I did.  Within just a few minutes I was hooked and binged watch the entire series over just a couple of days…I didn’t want to stop.  Rectify is the fictional story of a man named Daniel Holden, who has to put his life back together after having served 19 years on death row in a Georgia prison, for a brutal murder.  After DNA evidence called his conviction into question, Daniel is released from prison and this is the story of how he tries to put his life back together.  This is one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long while.

Bloodline

Now I *may* have started watching Bloodline because Coach Taylor is in it…yes it’s true. But after just one episode this series had drawn me in.  Bloodline is a story of a family of adult siblings who find their past secrets revealed when their outcast brother returns home.  It’s suspenseful, maddening and dark.  But so good.  I really enjoyed this show and cannot wait for season 2!

The Last Kingdom on Netflix

Now The Last Kingdom.  I admit that I did’t even want to watch this show, but after so many of my friends sang its praises I figured we should at least try to watch it.  Well, my friends were right.  This show is SO good.  So so good.  And Uhtred (the main character) is pretty easy on the eyes so that’s an added bonus!  All joking aside, The Last Kingdom is one to add to your list!  It is the story of Uhtred, a young warrior, who was adopted by a viking warlord after his father was killed in battle.  He adopts the Norse way of life until tragedy strikes, then he is on a mission to reclaim his birthright.

Next on my list?  Hannibal…this may be the darkest yet…yikes.

Hannibal on Netflix

Happy streaming!

  1. I tried looking for the Last kingdom on Netflix but couldn’t find it. Is it something coming out this year? Sounds good!

  2. Thanks for getting back to me! Nope, it just redirects me to the Netflix homepage. I can’t see Hannibal either. All the other ones are there though. Maybe you have first access since you’re part of the stream team? In that case, I’m jealous. LOL

  3. I totally started Bloodline for the same reason but haven’t gotten into it yet. Definitely going to check out Rectify though! I need a new show since I finished Friday Night Lights!

    1. I started with Bloodline because of “COACH TAYLOR” as well. (I mean, who wouldnt!) It took me several episodes, maybe even halfway, to finally get into it. Try to stick it out, the last few episodes had me biting my nails!

  4. Just watched the movie “Tell No One”….was rated #1 on a list of Netflix Top Ten Thrillers….highly recommend.
We watched “Making a Murderer” too, and were also deeply disturbed…..
On a lighter note, surely you have watched “Jane the Virgin” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”??!!
Also, don’t miss “Scrotal Recall”….sounds a little “ummm-WHAT?!!”, but trust me, you will LOVE it.
Good time of year to snuggle in and enjoy a harmless addiction, right??
    Thanks, Jo-Anna!!!

  5. Have you watched Sherlock yet? It’s very dark and moody, lol. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are excellent as Sherlock and Watson.
