Making Pillows from Placemats!

I was first inspired by an idea for pillow covers over at Centsational Girl.  She found napkins and used them to make pillows – genius!

So I’ve been on the lookout for pretty napkins, but I cannot seem to find any!  We just don’t have great stores here in Canada like World Market, so often our shopping is so limited!  Such a bummer!

Yesterday the mini-suburbanites and I ventured out to Ikea!  I love so many things there and I have to stop myself!  Eye candy everywhere, but the pretty colours and flowers on these place mats immediately caught my attention.  I wanted to buy them for our table setting, but with 3 messy eaters, white cloth place mats are just not in the cards!

I looked more closely at them and saw they had 2 layers to them…what if I opened them up and stuffed them to make a pillow?  Yes.  Yes.  Yes.  I can do it!  So I did.  Here they are!

A project that was completed in under an hour, and look how lovely they are!  And the best part?!  They each cost $2.99.  These pillows all together cost $6.  That’s right.  6 bucks.  Can’t beat that!

Gotta love inspiration!

Here’s How To:

With a seam ripper, open up your pillow along a short side.

Using cotton batting, stuff, stuff, stuff.  (I actually just took apart an extra bed pillow I had around)
Then sew, sew, sew.  Or you could seal it like Centsational Girl, by using fusible webbing.

  1. These turned out wonderful! I also lament that Canada has no Target or World Market, but I did find a nice placemat at Anthro that I plan to try this.

  3. Awesome idea! Might just have to make a trip to Ikea. As a fellow Canadian, I understand the shopping situation… The other day I heard a rumor that Target is coming to Canada. I’m really hoping that it’s true!

You have just solved a mystery for me, I had two mismatched placemats that were feeling a little lonely after being turfed off our bedside tables, and I really wasn’t sure what to do with them. But this will be the perfect new life for them! Thank you for sharing! If you have a spare minute you can have a peak at my blog http://shethrifts.blogspot.com/
