Outwitting the Toddler… A Tea Towel Project

Simple sewing project to keep your tea towels off the floor!

I have a toddler in the house who pulls my tea towels off of the stove and onto the floor all the time.
It’s this thing he does and it drives me crazy!!
So when I saw this great idea with tea towels on Martha Stewart, I thought this is just what I have been looking for and didn’t know it!
It’s a fabulous way to keep your kitchen organized and the floors clutter free!

Martha’s version used velcro, but I didn’t want to go out and buy any supplies, so I just used ribbon scraps I had around.  I love when a project basically costs nothing, except for the stuff already on hand!
And the best part is that I actually think these are prettier!  I love ribbon and bows!

Here they are!
Easy, easy project if you want to keep your towel secured to a bar or stove handle….
Or if you just want to add some pretty to your kitchen!

And they work.  Try as he might, he cannot get them off!
Oh, and they’re great for big kids and husbands too…why oh why can’t anyone hang up a tea towel?!

  • Just sew strips of ribbon about 5-6 inches long, onto the ends of the tea towel.  You can either do 3 strips on each end or 2.  I found 2 works just fine!
  • Sew the ribbons on by hand or use your sewing machine.
  • To finish the ends of the ribbon so they don’t fray, either sew them or using a lighter, carefully melt the end of the ribbon.  (obviously be careful not to burn anything!!)
  • And as always, be careful with kids and ovens.  Keep an eye on them in case they pull on the towels too hard and open the oven door.

Here are some others I made.
I had originally only made 1 towel, and that obviously wasn’t enough, so I ended up doing 7 in total.

  1. GENIUS!! Seriously! Nothing shy of GENIUS!! I have a toddler as well who absolutely INSISTS that my kitchen towel remain on the floor and will pull it off the stove handle whenever opportunity strikes! This idea alone will probably keep at least one future gray hair at bay!

  2. This is just brilliant!! I *need* to do this! And the towels are so very pretty, wish I could find something like that here. ๐Ÿ™‚ Many thanks for the inspiration!

  4. B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T!!!! I am TOTALLY stealing this idea!! With a toddler and a baby who loves to pull up on everything, I have given up and just left the towels on the floor most of the time, but now I will win the war!!
