Pie Crust:
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup shortening (lard)
- 1/4 cup water
Apple Pie Mix:
- 5 – 6 medium apples (peeled, cored and sliced)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 – 3 tbsp flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp salt
Crumble Topping:
- 2/3 cup flour
- 2/3 cup rolled oats
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 5 tbsp melted butter
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Pie Crust:
- Sift flour and salt into a large bowl.
- With a pastry cutter, cut in the shortening until the particles are pea sized.
- Sprinkle in water, 1 tsp or so at a time, mixing lightly with a fork. Don’t over mix or the crust will be tough.
- Press into a ball. It is okay if it is crumbly. In fact crumbly makes for a tender, flaky crust!
- This recipe makes 2 – 9″ crusts, so split the ball in 2, and freeze one half for later.
- Use a rolling pin to roll out the bottom crust.
- Press the crust into a 9″ pie plate.
Apple Pie Mix:
- In a separate bowl combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Set aside.
Crumble Topping:
- In another bowl combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and melted butter.
Putting it all together:
- To the crust in the pie plate, add the apple filling, then top with crumble mixture.
- Bake for about 1 hour, or until you see the apple mix bubbling up from under the crumble.
