Apple Crumble Pie

The cinnamon oat crumble topping on this Apple Crumble Pie is a delicious twist to classic apple pie!

Pie Crust:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening (lard)
  • 1/4 cup water

Apple Pie Mix:

  • 56 medium apples (peeled, cored and sliced (I use Macintosh))
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 23 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Crumble Topping:

  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 5 tbsp melted butter

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Pie Crust:

  1. Sift flour and salt into a bowl.
  2. With a pie cutter, cut in the shortening until the particles are pea sized.
  3. Sprinkle in water, 1 tsp or so at a time, mixing lightly with a fork. Don’t over mix or the crust will be tough.
  4. Press into a ball. It is okay if it is crumbly. In fact crumbly makes for a tender, flaky crust!
  5. This recipe makes 2 – 9″ crusts, so split the ball in 2, and freeze one half for later.
  6. Press the crust into a 9″ pie plate.

Apple Pie Mix:

  1. In a separate bowl combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt.  Set aside.

Crumble Topping:

  1. In another bowl combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and melted butter.

Putting it all together:

  1. To the crust in the pie plate, add the apple mix, then top with crumble mixture.
  2. Bake for about 1 hour, or until you see the apple mix bubbling up from under the crumble.

This recipe makes 2 crusts, so after you split the dough in half, you can freeze one half for later!
